Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum on Monday condemned violence related to the widespread demonstration in Los Angeles against Trump’s administration’s crackdown on immigrants.

During her regular morning press conference, Sinbaum called for respect for legal procedures in immigration enforcement and called on US officials to support the rule of law.

“We condemn violence no matter where we come from,” Sheinbaum said according to Reuters.

The protest broke out Friday after immigration and customs enforcement took place in the city and surrounding communities. The demonstration was largely peaceful, but there was tension on Saturday and Sunday.

Police reported 42 arrests after Sunday’s protests became violent. This includes 199 cases by the California Highway Patrol.

Local and state leaders, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, criticised President Donald Trump’s use of the National Guard in trying to suppress anti-ice immigrants, saying the escalation of power has only led to further issues.

Newsom has also announced plans to sue the Trump administration over the development.

Trump also indicated that he was willing to bring in the US Marines if he determined that the situation guaranteed it.
