Authorities say the Moore Park School driver was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the driver who drove a small van for the Moore Park Unified School District was greeted with a student Wednesday morning when parents of the child reportedly smelled alcohol from the driver.

Parents immediately called the school district and notified the Moore Park Police Department. A statement from Supt. Kelly Hayes said the district’s transport dispatch instructed the driver to pull the car and stop the van shortly after receiving the report.

The van students were moved to a backup van, arrived at school on time and contacted their parents shortly after the police investigation was over, the superintendent said.

The district’s resource officer, Deputy Officer K’lynn Jackson, confirmed Thursday to The Times that police, including Breathalyzer checks, had conducted outdoor sobriety tests, but had no authority to share the results.

The driver of Jason Watson, 39, of Moore Park, was arrested and booked at the Ventura County Jail.

In a written statement to the Times Thursday, Hayes praised parents and the Moore Park Police Department for making the first report.

“The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority,” Hayes’ statement continued. “MUSD’s transportation division maintains a strong safety record and requires all drivers to complete extensive background checks and training. Additionally, all drivers will be subject to strict federal drug and alcohol regulations, including pre-employment screening and random drug and alcohol testing throughout the year.”
