The one-year-old died Wednesday night after being injured in a car accident involving the child’s mother, according to a Long Beach official.

The Long Beach Police Department said it happened around 6pm Wednesday in the 5500 block of Ackerfield Avenue.

Officers responded to the call for a traffic collision and arrived to find a crew from the Long Beach Fire Station who was already providing medical assistance to the victims.

“The child was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to injuries despite the efforts of his life by paramedics and medical staff,” LBPD said in a statement.

A preliminary investigation by the department found that an accident occurred while the mother of a toddler was operating a vehicle in the apartment’s auto port area.

Her one-year-old was walking in front of the car while her mother was running the car. The mother had not seen her baby, so the child was attacked while the car was moving, officials said.

“At this point, neither driving impairment nor distracting driving appears to be a factor in the collision,” LBPD said.

Authorities did not name or disclose other discriminating factors related to infants.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call detective Ashley Van Holland, 562-570-7355, the Long Beach Police Department’s Clash Investigation Division. Anonymous tips can be submitted through LA Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.
