Mystical diseases associated with the Venice Canal claim to live a seventh dog, urging members of the involved community to warn pet owners to stay vigilant.

The latest victim, a 7-year-old terrier visiting from Arizona, fell severely ill after a walk along the canal. Since the death first reported on July 6, six other dogs have been ill and have been exposed to the canal area.

Residents report surprising symptoms, including vomiting, lethargy, seizures and sudden collapse of the dog. “The stench along the east side of the canal is scary. You have to hold your breath to avoid getting sick from the smell,” said local resident Elaine Scott. “I’ve never smelled so bad.”

In addition to the mystery, dead ducks were found floating in a small boat docked into a canal, raising concerns about possible environmental pollution.

Officials in the LA County Basin visited the Venice Canal on Tuesday to collect water samples for testing. Theories include exposure to toxic algae, rodent venom, or unidentified viruses, but the cause of the disease remains unknown.

“The cause is still unknown, but symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, seizures and collapse,” the Venice Canal Association posted on Instagram. “Our hearts are directed at families who have lost their beloved companions. These dogs were more than just pets. They are families and we value our community members.”

Barbara Marsh, the owner of the grieving pet, shared the loss of her dog’s shadow. Shadow died suddenly after showing symptoms consistent with kidney failure despite previous veterinary guarantees. Another owner lost a one-year-old golden retriever to illness.

To track outbreaks, the Neighborhood Association distributed flyers around the canal and created shared Google documents for residents to report illnesses and suspicious activity.

Pet owners are required to take precautions. Keep your dog on a leash, prevent him from drinking and swimming in canal water, avoiding a bowl of shared water, and seeking immediate veterinary care if symptoms develop.
