North Hollywood’s Valley Plaza Shopping Centre has been abandoned for almost a decade and has deteriorated into a hot spot for fires, squats and criminal activity. Now, it is pushing for it to be declared a public nuisance, as it is destroyed.
Once considered a treasure of the San Fernando Valley, the shopping centre declined as it attempted to compete with new businesses in the 1970s, and was heavily hit by the severe damage sustained in the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
Several ownership was subsequently changed, and although a company called 5 Point LLC, also known as Charles Company, took over about a decade ago, it never reopened the business.
LA City Councilman Adrin Nazarian is currently leading accusations that have the Building and Safety Committee declare the site a public nuisance.
“My predecessor, councillor [Paul] Clecolian, we both approached the owner. We tried to help them,” Nazarian said. “They didn’t take the necessary measures. And they didn’t take the necessary measures, if you think about it, when you were thinking about it, when the economic booming was ’14, ’15, ’16, ’17, when interest rates were low and many people were making incredible investments, they didn’t take the necessary measures when they didn’t at that point. Now, do they want to do that? With these high interest rates? They’re not going to do that now.”

The board is expected to hear the proposal Tuesday night, and if approved, it can ultimately give the city power to destroy the shopping centre.
Nazarians say the cost of destroying the square will fall on the owner.
KTLA has contacted the title company for comment and is awaiting a statement.
