Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside Oxnard City Hall on Tuesday to protest immigrant attacks at local agricultural sectors and packaging facilities.
Agricultural workers in Ventura County urged protesters to meet peacefully outside government buildings following immigration raids Tuesday morning by federal agents. Protesters chanting and holding signs supporting those detained called for the release of detainees.
“We’re angry because ice doesn’t belong to Oxnard. Ice doesn’t belong to Ventura County,” one protester said.
Videos posted on social media show ICE agents at farm fields and packing facilities in Ventura County. Dozens of migrant workers were taken into custody Tuesday morning, according to the Ventura County Farm Bureau, which represents farmers, ranchers and farming businesses.
VC Defensa, a coalition of advocacy groups dedicated to protecting immigrants in Ventura County, called for an end to the attack. He accused agents of using racial profiling and threats to enter private property without judicial permission.
“It’s really important for our immigrant community to see us here,” said Vanessa Valdez, a lawyer with VC Defensa. “They are scared, they are stressed, they are separated. Our kids are terrified and hurt.”
United Farm Workers, a union representing U.S. farm workers, said they are aware of enforcement measures targeting farm workers in Ventura, Kern and Tulea counties.
“We urge all farm employers to act immediately to protect their employees in the workplace. “Employers should train all staff to understand the requirements necessary for their rights and entry into their property, including signed judicial warrants.”
The total number of undocumented individuals arrested on Tuesday is unknown.
