The families of Eric Menendez and Lyle Menendez announced Friday that a new Los Angeles County district will show support for the brothers, who are currently serving life sentences for the 1989 shotgun slayings of their parents in Beverly Hills. He is scheduled to meet with prosecutor Nathan Hochman.
The Eric Lyle Justice Coalition, described as a family-led effort, released a statement ahead of the meeting.
“As we prepare to meet with Prosecutor Hochman, our family hopes for an open and fair discussion. Despite the abuse they endured as children and the unfairness of their current sentences, Eric and Lyle “For the past 30 years, Menendez has assumed his responsibility to take action and contribute positively to the community through leadership and rehabilitation,” the statement reads in part.

More than 20 family members of Jose and Kitty Menendez plan to attend Friday’s rally to argue the counterclaim.
But not everyone in the Menendez family believes the brothers should be released.
Milton Andersen, Kitty Menendez’s brother, said he believes Eric and Lyle were not sexually abused by their father and that “justice was served.”
“Mr. Anderson believes, based on the evidence, that this was the first time they learned that their father was trying to remove them from the will, essentially making them unable to work.” The attorney said this during an appearance on the Elizabeth Vargas Show. Report. “Eric and Lyle then went to buy guns in other people’s names.”
Former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon announced in October that he would support the charges against the Menendez brothers.
“I strongly support clemency for Eric Menendez and Lyle Menendez, who are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole. We’ve been working on creating new programs to help with the return,” Gascón said.
However, Gascón was defeated as district attorney in November, and Hockman has not announced his position on the controversial issue.
“My approach to any case, whether it’s Menendez or frankly any case, is this: It’s going to take a lot of hard work,” Hochman told KTLA in November. “In that case, we would have to sift through thousands of pages of confidential prison files, review thousands of court records from months-long trials, and speak with prosecutors, law enforcement, and defense attorneys. Hmm…and the families of the victims.”
California Governor Gavin Newson said he would postpone any decision on pardoning the Menendez brothers until Hochman reviewed the case.
Lyle Menendez (age 21 at the time) and Eric Menendez (age 18 at the time) admitted that they shot and killed their father, Jose Menendez, and their mother, Kitty Menendez, in order to avoid public knowledge of Jose’s sexual activities. They claimed that they feared that their parents were trying to kill them to prevent their death. According to the Associated Press, she abused Eric for years.
They were convicted in 1996.
