An Orange County-based robbery ring was taken into custody after good Samaritans in San Bernardino County intervened to help an elderly female victim, authorities announced Monday.
The terrifying ordeal began Dec. 5 when two women and a man approached the woman in the 10000 block of Foothill Boulevard in Rancho Cucamonga and attempted to steal her jewelry, including a necklace she was wearing around her neck.
Deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene at approximately 10:25 a.m. on a report of an attempted robbery and learned that the trio had fled in a waiting vehicle.
The robber’s vehicle was found about two miles away at Foothill Boulevard and Milliken Avenue, and the three suspects were identified as Maria Caldarau, 30, Miheala Guardian, 35, and Ovidiu Alexandri. Stan, 33, both of Fullerton, was taken into custody.
Caldarau and Stan were found to have warrants for their arrests in other counties for robbery, theft from an elderly person and grand theft from a person, an SBSD news release detailed.
The three were charged with attempted robbery, theft against an elderly person and criminal conspiracy.
Detectives believe there are likely other victims who did not report the theft to authorities due to the nature of the crime, and are releasing the photos in the hope that others will come forward.
