President Donald Trump threatened to impose “large” sanctions on Russia after a massive attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In a post about True Society, President Trump said he is strongly considering “sanctions and tariffs” until a peace ceasefire and a final settlement agreement are reached.
Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, told reporters that Trump was “ready to use carrots or sticks to bring both Russia and Ukraine to the table. Regarding details of what Fox News Channel’s senior White House correspondent Jackie Heinrich could approve, Hassett simply said “there is a lot.”

“Russia continues to fear energy,” Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Khalschenko wrote on Facebook. “Again, the energy and gas infrastructure in various regions of Ukraine were under the fires of large missiles and drones.”
Russia has attacked Ukrainian energy infrastructure multiple times throughout the three-year war. In April 2024, Russia destroyed one of Ukraine’s largest power plants, and in December 2024, Russia disrupted Ukraine’s power grid.
President Trump also included a message to both Ukraine and Russia in his true social post: “Before it’s too late, get to the table now.”

Zelensky himself will not attend the meeting, but his team will sit with his American counterparts to discuss the end of the war.
In announcing Ukraine’s participation in consultations, Zelenskyy said his country was “most interested in peace.” The issue of peace caused friction between Trump and Zelensky after the president said his Ukrainian counterparts were “not ready for peace” following the spewing of their oval offices.

“He downplayed the United States in his precious oval office. He can come back when he is ready for peace,” Trump wrote to the Truth Society last week after a fierce meeting.
But things seemed to have been smoothed out between the two leaders. Trump was reading a letter from Zelenskyy to a joint session of Congress during his speech. Trump thanked Zelensky’s letter and said he wanted to see the end of the “savage conflict.”
