10. California’s Role in the Congressional Balance of Power

This past election season, several races in Southern California proved important because they could tilt the balance of power in the House to one side. Christian Gross, a professor of political science and public policy at the University of Southern California, joined NBCLA on election night to participate as the first vote count began.

Prop. 36 increases penalties for repeat drug and theft offenses. Proponents argue that crime is out of control and something must be done, while opponents say this is not the answer. Proposition 36 challenged many California voters and politicians about their stance on the ongoing retail theft epidemic. Proposition 36 is part of the key provisions of Proposition 47, which voters passed in 2014 to address prison overcrowding by reclassifying some theft and drug-related crimes as misdemeanors. proposed to cancel it. 6. Magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Malibu
