Police say a US tourist who was visiting Puerto Rico for a Bad Bunny residency was fatally shot in Lara, who was fatally shot early Sunday.

According to a police statement, the victim was identified as 25-year-old Kevin Marless, who lived in New York.

The filming took place in a thrust at a night spot called “Shellter for Mass Treated Men” in La Perla, a coastal community that has struggled to bring about a dark reputation.

Murder Detective Sgt. In a phone interview, Arnardo Lewis said the shooting took place when several people near the mares began to discuss the matter, one person pulled out a gun and shot at least three people, including the mares. Two other men living in La Perla were injured and remained hospitalized.

Lewis said Marless was an innocent bystander. He, along with three other friends, told police he was in Puerto Rico at one of Bad Bunny’s 30 concerts.

The mare was shot dead on the left side of his abdomen and was taken to Puerto Rico’s largest public hospital, where he died, authorities said.

Lewis said police still don’t know what people are discussing and don’t have an explanation for the shooter. “There’s little information,” he said.

Lewis added that Marless’s three friends are also from New York. He had no home for them.

La Perla is located on the outskirts of a historic district known as Old San Juan, popular with tourists. Shanti Town was home to hundreds of people, which once served as the biggest distribution point of Puerto Rican heroin and was known for its violence.

Police once avoided a community that had signs that declared “It’s not open to visitors. Don’t enter.”

But the violence was eased in 2011 when hundreds of federal agents stormed the slums and arrested dozens of people, including some well-known community leaders who were later convicted.

The neighborhood was even safer and more welcome after Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Papa Yankee featured it on the hit “Despacito.”

However, isolated and violent incidents continue.

In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after police said they had told them to stop filming within the community.

Then, in April 2024, a 24-year-old Delaware tourist was killed and his body was set on fire after police said he and his friend were attacked after purchasing drugs. Police said they were trying to take photos of La Perla after the victim was warned not to do so.

The 3.2 million island has reported 277 murders so far this year, compared to 325 murders in the same period last year.
