No, it’s not back in the 90s. Green Day is the headlining of this year’s Coachella and a welcome throwback to the Fest’s More Rock and Roll roots, serving as evidence that punk icons Billy Joe Armstrong, Mike Dillund and Trecour are permanently cool, even 38 years later.
Before the band takes the stage again at Indio, here are everything we know and some things we predict.
How many days does Green Day play at Coachella?
They will perform on Saturday, April 19th, on the second weekend of the festival (the band already played a high energy set on Saturday, April 12th, on the first weekend of the fest).
What time do you play Coachella Stage on Green Day?
Green Day will be on stage at 9:05pm and will perform until 10:45pm. They play Coachella (Aka Aka Main) after Charli XCX and before Travis Scott’s late-night set. While Green Day regularly performs almost three-hour shows on tours, the one-hour, 40-minute festival set gives the band a lot of time to their biggest hits.
Have you played Coachella before on Green Day?
Surprisingly, the band never played Coachella before this year’s headlining gig. However, Armstrong appeared as a special guest on the alternative in 2014.

After opening Strong with “American Idiot” (who got a big response when Armstrong changed the lyrics to “I’m not part of Maga Agenda”), the set pulled from several albums of the band’s decades-long career from Dookie, who just celebrated its 30th anniversary (Welcome to Paradise”, “Longview”, “Basket Case”, “Basket Fored”, “Cong Cong Fored” Broken Dreams”, “Holiday”, “Jesus of Souburbia”, “Wake Me Up on Dends”), their latest Green Day albums, Saviors (“One Eyed Bastard” and “Bobby Sox”), and some other songs in between. And in classic green day fashion, the evening ended with “good relaxation (time of your life)” and fireworks.
What special guests might appear?
In fact, if the weekend is any indication, it is possible that Green Day will not be able to bring out any special guests at all. (Some people were hoping that Billie Eilish would join the band last weekend, which is likely to be more likely given her recent team-up on “Last Night’s Earth” at Fireaid.) But Armstrong himself was a special guest on Go-Go’s Friday afternoon set.
Rather than relying on the power of external stars for the gig, punk rockers want to share the spotlight with their fans. Brooke was to remember Weekend 1 to help the band sing “Know Your Enemies.” Then another fan joined the band and ended the night by playing Armstrong’s guitar on “Good Riddance.” There’s a good chance they’ll invite someone again, so polish your code before the show.
