Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against a man accused of ploughing into a crowd of pedestrians outside an East Hollywood nightclub and shooting a driver who allegedly injured 37 people.

According to criminal charges, Efren Villarobos, 28, of Lawndale, is charged with one felony of possession of a firearm and a felon, each of whom possesses a firearm.

The complaint alleges that Villa Lobos personally used a handgun on the crime committee and personally caused serious physical injuries to driver Fernando Ramirez.

Villalobos is allegedly pre-convicted of robbery in 2024, starting from 2022 for grand theft, according to the complaint.

He was taken into custody by Redondo Beach police officers on Sunday around 1:15pm, authorities said. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department inmate records showed Villa Lobos was officially arrested at 5:45pm on Sunday at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart department.

According to LAPD, Villalobos is suspected of shooting 29-year-old Ramirez, 29, in a chaotic scene outside a nightclub early on July 19th.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of North Vermont Avenue around 2am. There, a large-scale casualty case was reported involving at least 37 victims.

LAPD captain Ben Fernandez told the Los Angeles Times last month that Ramirez was kicked out of the nightclub for being destructive before he crashed into the crowd.

Efrain Villalobos has been accused of shooting a driver who plowed a car into a crowd outside the East Hollywood Club last month. The video aired on NBC4 News at 11pm on August 3, 2025.

Ramirez, who has a long criminal history in Orange County, dates back to 2014, was charged on July 22 and was charged with 37 counts where he could face a potential life sentence if convicted as a charge.

The charges “respond to each of the 37 victims who were injured as a result of Mr. Ramirez’s actions,” district attorney Nathan Hochman said last month.

Police say Ramirez was pulled out of the vehicle and shot in the back by Villarrobos, as onlookers set him up after the crash.

Meanwhile, Ramirez is back in court in downtown Los Angeles for his September 4 arrest. His previous court dates were postponed for just a week while he recovered from a gunshot wound after crashing.
