The man is in custody at the Los Angeles Police Department after hours of standoffs in the Atwater Village Costco parking lot.

Police say officers were initially called to the 800 block of Academy Road in Elysian Park around 10:30am, and the driver allegedly poses a crime threat was urged to pursue, including a Ford F-450 at about 10:45am.

The vehicle looked like a passenger bus, and the driver was chased by police when he parked in the 2900 block of Los Ferris Boulevard.

Upon reaching the parking lot, the man engaged in a conflict with the police.

The chase driver, who ended in the parking lot at Los Feliz Costco on August 4, 2025, has intimate his suicide intentions.

His vehicle has “toxic tested my body and this vehicle.”

For a long time, the man refused to leave the bus and headed out onto the passenger stairs of the vehicle.

But after a while, police negotiators were able to drive him out of the bus, Detective Meghan Aguilar said.

However, due to the nature of the man’s statement written on the bus, it took some time.

“You never know, so you need to be utmost care at all times. That’s why the officers were behind protected areas. Why we cleaned up the parking lot and kept people from getting too close,” she said.

What prompted pursuits and standoffs, and perhaps the threats as well – Aguilar confirmed to KTLA’s Jennifer McGraw that men appear to be in the midst of a mental health crisis.

“He was talking about what he needed to talk to people in power, what he wanted to turn over,” she said. “Fortunately, what we went through here allowed them to convince him that he was in a safe place to come out and deal with him and get the help he needed.”

The costco parking lot will remain open to the public until you confirm that no bombs are present.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health or suicide ideas, dial 988 on your mobile phone and call the national mental health crisis hotline and immediately seek professional help.
