The farmer who produces LA’s best (and most expensive) strawberries is retiring.

LA Redditors may decry its price ($15 to $24 per pound), but once you taste the sweet, aromatic flesh of Harry’s berries, you’ll quickly realize why they’re Southern California’s most expensive strawberries. You can understand it. At our certified organic family farm in Oxnard, we grow delicate, flavorful strawberry varieties and harvest only the ripest strawberries, shortening their shelf life but maximizing their flavor. Available at farmers markets and high-end grocery stores, it’s a favorite of many of LA’s best chefs.

Today, fourth-generation farmers Molly Jean (daughter of the farm’s namesake, Harry Iwamoto) and her husband Rick are retired. (Don’t worry, they’re leaving Harry’s Berry in the hands of their adult children and some grandchildren.) In honor of their decades of hard work, AOC hosted a retirement celebration for the Jean family. And we have lots of prizes up for grabs. A one-night-only Harry’s Berry special will be available at the restaurant’s Brentwood location on Thursday, September 26th.

For Harry’s Berry superfans, it’s a chance to meet the Gene family first-hand and taste the farm’s prime produce, which includes not just strawberries but tomatoes and beans. (Strawberries are available year-round, but are generally more abundant in the summer.) “This is a moment to pay homage to an epic life of agriculture and good food,” says chef Suzanne Goin. said in a press release. “Please join us as we celebrate Molly and Rick!”

Highlights of the one-night special include spinach and strawberry salad with dandelion, ricotta salata and candied pecans; Alaska halibut and kidney beans, Santa Barbara pistachios, and Harry’s berries. Hanger steak with late summer tomato and black olive chimichurri. Strawberry ice cream sandwich with sugar cookie and bittersweet chocolate.

All dishes are available alongside AOC Brentwood’s regular a la carte menu. Dinner reservations for September 26th are available on OpenTable.
