The former Culver City employee was arrested for allegedly sexually abused a child under the age of 14 – and perhaps an additional victim announced Thursday.

Police detained Stephen Martinez, 43, of Los Angeles on July 16, and booked him at Culver City Jail on suspicion of committing indecent and lewd behavior with at least one minority.

The investigation began on July 7th after police were warned of allegations of sexual abuse involving Martinez. Detectives at the Culver Police Station quickly began an investigation that led to his arrest nine days later.

Martinez was employed by the city of Culver City Parks, Recreation and Community Services sectors from June 2020 to June 2025, working as a senior recreation leader who was involved in youth programming in multiple urban facilities and parks.

According to police, Martinez ended from his position with the city due to unrelated issues prior to reports of alleged abuse.

Both the PRCS department and the Culver City Police Department are currently working to notify parents and guardians whose children may have interacted with Martinez through city programming.

“This remains an active and continuous investigation,” the authorities said in a press release. “The Culver City Police Department is dedicated to protecting the safety and well-being of our community, especially our youngest members.”

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and urge anyone with relevant information to contact Ryan Thompson during Lt or ryan.thompson@culvercity.org at 310-253-6302.
