After six days and over 300 cans of spray painting, artist Brian Peterson painted the tallest mural in Long Beach, building around 10 stories on the 10th floor.
The 86-foot mural, outside downtown Marriott Long Beach, features a young girl surrounded by bubbles. Peterson hopes that this film will inspire adults to pursue their dreams like they did as children.
“In the same way, young children chase the bubble. Peterson said, “What if we could encourage adults to return to childish innocence, not fear failure, but rather not fear failure, but rather pursue what is above our hearts.”
Peterson is best known for his famous Kobe Bryant mural. This adorns the Ovation Hollywood walls and the gym at Nickerson Gardens.
His latest mural was created as part of this year’s Long Beach Walls. This is the annual weekly festival, according to its website, featuring works by 12 artists that combine art with local culture and history.
Wanting that his work would inspire and connect with the community, Peterson said he portrayed the girl to represent the diversity of the city. He was often asked about the girl’s ethnicity, he said, but he didn’t understand how the mural resembles his five-year-old daughter until after it was completed.
“She saw the mural. She loves it,” the artist said. “When I got home from my trip, she presented me with a small painting made of daddy who painted a mural. She did her best kind of production about it.”
Since 2015, over 120 murals have been run by Long Beach walls, spanning 40 square miles of long beaches. This year’s theme was “Art: Catalysts of Change.”
The artist painted murals in downtown, public schools such as Lowell Elementary School and Renaissance High School, as well as other cultural settings.
