Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope in history to captivate the world with his humble style and concerns about poor but marginalized conservatives, accompanied by criticism of capitalism and climate change, passed away on Monday. He was 88 years old.
The Vatican then revealed that the cause of Francis’ death was a stroke that caused him to sleep and lead to heart failure.
“At 7:35 this morning, Francis’ Roman bishop returned to his father’s house. His life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his church,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell said Monday from the chapel of Domus Santa Marta, where Francis lived.
Francis suffers from chronic lung disease and was admitted to the hospital on February 14, 2025 due to a respiratory crisis that led to double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the Pope’s longest hospitalization in 12 years.

He last made his public appearance on Sunday, giving an Easter blessing and popemobile tour through cheerful crowds of St. Peters Square. The date of the funeral has not been announced. The next Pope should still be decided.
The Vatican also said the Pope had ordered him to be buried in a simple grave in Major St. Mary’s Cathedral. The cathedral features Francis’ favorite icon of the Virgin Mary, who was particularly devoted.
Francis was introduced as Pope 266 on March 13, 2013.
