Cudahy responded on Tuesday after the video circulating online video appeared to indicate that Deputy Mayor Cynthia Gonzalez was calling on gangs to protect their neighborhoods from immigration agents.
“I want to know where all the Choros in Los Angeles on 18th Avenue, Florencia, are,” Gonzalez appears to have said in the video. “Where is the leadership? You guys are about territory and this is 18th Avenue, so this is Florencia. You guys tag everything, insist on hoods, and now Hood is invaded by the biggest gangs so you won’t get a peek at you.”
NBC4 does not independently verify the reliability of the video.
In response to the distribution on social media, the city said, “it reflects her personal views given by the deputy mayor and does not represent the views or official positions of Gadahi city.”
The Department of Homeland Security has denounced the video and called it “sneaky.”
“She is seeking criminal gangs, including the vicious 18th Avenue gang, to commit violence against our brave ice law enforcement,” a DHS statement read. “This type of garbage has resulted in an increase of over 500% in assault on our ICE law enforcement officers. Secretary Nome was clear. Assaulting a federal officer will result in a charge to the fullest extent of the law.”
NBC4 contacted Gonzalez for comment.
