WASHINGTON – The White House is considering inviting Ukrainian President Voldy Mie Zelensky to Alaska. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week.
“It’s being discussed,” said one of those who explained to the discussion.
Those who described the discussion with senior US officials said the visit had not been completed and it was unclear whether Zelenskyy would eventually be in Alaska for the meeting.
The senior management said it was “absolutely” possible.
“Everyone is very excited about what will happen,” the official said.
Asked if the US officially invited Zelensky to Alaska, a White House official said, “The president remains open to a trilateral summit with both leaders. Currently, the White House is focusing on the bilateral meetings that President Putin has requested.”
The Ukrainian government did not respond to a request for comment.
Trump announced Friday that he was meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15th, as he was trying to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine. The White House has set the Zelensky and Putin meetings for the meeting between Trump and the Russian president, but Trump later said that it is not a prerequisite.
If Zelenskyy travels to Alaska, it is not clear whether he and Putin will be in the same room, one of those explained the argument said.
The surge in diplomacy aimed at ending the war in Ukraine comes as the president has either agreed to a ceasefire or faced new sanctions after Trump’s special mission Steve Witkov met with Putin in Moscow ahead of the deadline on Friday.
Although Putin has not agreed to a ceasefire, he proposed an outline of an agreement to end the war that would allow Russia to maintain a large strip of Ukrainian territory. Zelensky rebelliously said on Saturday that the Ukrainians would not give land to the occupyers.
Trump said Friday between Russia and Ukraine “there will be a territorial exchange to make both territories better.”
The administrative authorities were working on Saturday to seek support from the Ukrainian government and European leaders for a potential ceasefire.
