On Wednesday, March 12th, Michelin added 15 new restaurants to its California Guide, including seven from the Los Angeles area. All additions are considered “recommended” and will receive Michelin Star or Bib Gourmand (the guide’s budget-friendly category) later this year. Other additions to the north include Statori of Carmel by the Sea and the four kings of San Francisco. LA has opened all new guide additions since last summer.

Among them is Tomat in Westchester. This was recently featured in Longform Review, an ambitious restaurant garden in a stinking distance at Lax In-N-Out.

In alphabetical order, the seven LA area restaurants are as follows, and you can get the full inspector notes from the official Michelin press release. All restaurants are within city restrictions unless otherwise specified. We linked each timeout article and focused on our own star designation in the bracket.

For those unfamiliar with how Michelin restaurants are chosen, here is how it works: Anonymous Michelin inspectors travel through certain areas and award the best of the best, from one to three stars. Here in LA, it meant both ultra-specialized opportunity meals like Hayato and Providence, as well as slightly cheaper date night friendly restaurants like Orsa & Winston and Gwen. BIB Gourmand constitutes a second category of budget-friendly restaurants that inspectors deserve attention. These relatively new picks acknowledge Los Angeles’ more diverse cuisine, beyond the luxury French and Japanese spots that are generally preferred by awarded stars (Michelin will be presenting them at the awards ceremony later this year).
