Tom Lamas will take over the anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” after Lester Holt stepped into the summer, the network announced Wednesday.

Lamas is a senior correspondent and anchor for “Top Stories with Tom Lamas,” an evening newscast streamed on NBC News. Vice President of NBC News, Janelle Rodriguez, executive vice president, continues to anchor “top stories” every night.

“Tom has a triumph of journalistic excellence, passionate storytelling and indomitable integrity. It has all the traits that have long been a trademark of “NBC Nightly News,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “In addition, he helped NBC News grow and now join a major streaming news network and helped bring NBC News to a new generation of audiences.”

Lamas said pinning “nightly news” was “a deep honor and a tremendous responsibility.”

“We look forward to working with world-class journalists on ‘Night News’ and ‘Top Stories’ to guide our audiences with the most important stories each night,” Lamas said in a statement.

Lamas will become the first Latino journalist to host a weekday edition of Nightly News. ” Jose Diaz Barato, who will be holding the show on MSNBC, is anchoring Saturday’s Nightly News. ”

Holt, the anchor and managing editor of Nightly News, announced last month that he plans to step down this summer. He remains a fixture for the network, which plays a full-time role in “Dateline,” where he was a major anchor for almost 15 years.

“Lester Holt is a great guy and one of the most reliable broadcasters of our time,” Lamas said. “Lester, I promise to be dedicated to my audience and to be committed to the truth.”

Holt spoke to the “nightly” staff on the phone on Wednesday, saying that pinning the broadcast was “not just one of the great jobs, but also the great staff he inherited. I know you’ll give him 100% support when you transition.”

Before starting his professional journalism career with NBC News, Llamas started as an intern at his local Telemundo station, working as an overnight production assistant before embedding the campaign. He climbed the news industry as a local journalist for WTVJ and WNBC.

He later served as ABC’s Chief Bureau correspondent, pinning the weekend edition of the network’s “World News Tonight.”

He rejoined NBC News as a senior national correspondent in 2021 and quickly became the anchor of “Top Stories.” He is also a regular filling anchor for “Nightly News” and frequently reports to the program in addition to the “Today” show.

Lamas leads the coverage of large-scale news and political events on NBC News, reporting on pivotal US and global storylines, including the Israel-Hamas War. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Attempt to assassinate Pennsylvania President Donald Trump. The Olympics in Tokyo and Paris. And some natural disasters.

He interviewed world leaders and politicians, including Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Lamas will begin his new role this summer.
