LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – Get ready, Southern California: The next wave of the holiday travel season is here.
The flight will be unique, with about 40 million people flying for the holidays from Dec. 19 to Jan. 2, according to estimates from the Transportation Security Administration.
That’s a 6.2% increase over last year, according to TSA, and Thursday was expected to be the busiest day to fly. The next busiest days are expected to be Friday, December 20th and Friday, December 27th.
In total, about 119.3 million people will move more than 50 miles from home during the same period, according to AAA. If this prediction comes true, this year would surpass 2019 as the busiest holiday travel period on record.
“This is a time of year when lifelong memories are made with loved ones, and travel plays a big part in that,” said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel. “With Christmas falling on a Wednesday this year, we expect record numbers of travelers on the weekends around the holiday.”
According to Hertz, Los Angeles is one of the cities with the highest demand for rental cars during the holiday season.
Annie Rose Ramos in LAX contributed to this report.
