A battalion of 500 US Marines is mobilizing to Los Angeles to respond to anti-immigration enforcement riots, Fox News learned.

Marines are tasked with protecting federal property and federal officials, and their deployment is unlimited.

Marines do not perform the role of law enforcement, but it is unclear what their use of force rules is when protesters throw or spit things out.

The new development comes after President Donald Trump sent around 2,000 national security guards to the rioting city over the weekend.

The Marines are from the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Marines, Twentynin Palms, California.

Just before the unfolding, Trump expressed optimism that the situation in Los Angeles is improving.

“I mean, I think we control it very well,” he told reporters. “I think it was a very bad situation. It was heading in the wrong direction. Now it’s heading in the right direction.”

The mobilization of the Marines is undoubtedly eliciting protests from liberal critics. California Gov. Gavin Newsom filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Monday for deploying security guards.

The governor’s office downplayed the military’s movements and called it “completely uninformed.”

“From our understanding, this is moving Marines from one base to another. At this point, the information we have is that Marines have not been deployed (it’s a difference that it’s mobilized).

Newsom and the California Attorney General have insisted Trump and the defence seconds. Pete Hegses “trampled” California sovereignty by invoking the state’s national guard without Newsom’s approval.

Meanwhile, Trump defended the decision Monday, adding that if protesters spit in the face of Los Angeles security guards, they would “be hit harder than they’ve ever been hit.”

“If they spit, we’ll hit,” Trump wrote. “That disrespect is not tolerated!”

Federal law generally prohibits US military from carrying out domestic law enforcement purposes unless the president invokes a rebellion law.

Newsom insisted that Trump “let’s make a crisis,” and that the president “want to confusion, so he can justify more crackdowns, more fear, more control.”

The protest began in response to an Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) attack in the Angel City as the Trump administration moved to keep its promise of massive deportation. Over the weekend, the protest was left to violence, leaving the vehicle that smashed into a broken window at the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters.
