Over the past few months, volunteers and community members have come across a rotten smell, arriving at the Mi Sela Youth Centre in Bell.

sauce? A discarded dog pouch.

The Center is a partnership with the Latinx Equity Alliance, providing youth clubs, community building workshops and cultural and legal resources to the LGBTQ+ community in South Los Angeles. However, recently the centre has seen a pattern of dog poop in front and above the awnings at the entrance to the building.

“We had over 10 bags. It was the second time we had to do a complete sweep of the awning. Are you worried about what happens if it escalates in the future?” Sanva Lojero, program manager at MI Sela, told NBC Los Angeles. “This is a youth resource centre, so we have clients coming every day and we don’t want to feel like they’re being harassed.”

It is unclear who is throwing the shit or why. However, given the centre serving LGBTQ+ young people, some people argue that it is intentional and potentially hate-motivated vandalism.

In a statement posted to Instagram, the Latino Equity Alliance denounced the recent incident as “abhorrent” and “unacceptable.”

“It is shocking that youth and community organizations continue to face such targeted hatred and threats in 2025. Law enforcement emphasizes that they are unable to act without catching the perpetrator of the act.

LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn has pledged a $2,500 grant to install more security cameras at the community center in hopes of capturing the perpetrators.

“The fact that this person is out of the way to do this tells them everything about them and nothing about the LGBTQ community in southeastern LA,” Hearn said in a statement.

Currently, the security cameras are likely to be on the way, so Mi Sela staff say they won’t be blocked from the mission.

“We’re not going anywhere. We’re still providing resources,” Rogero said.

Anyone with information can contact Bell Police Station at (323) 585-1245.
