A canyon fire broke out early Thursday afternoon, east of Lake Pill in Ventura County. The temperature was approaching 100 degrees there. The brush fire is one of at least four burns in Southern California this week. The Bernardino National Forest between Anza and Pinion Pines had grown to nearly 1,700 acres by Thursday. Over 4,400 wildfires have been reported in California this year, with over 3,800 to 221,100 acres burning last year.

The best Thursday afternoon east of Lake Pill in Ventura County led to evacuation as warm temperatures peaked in Southern California.

The Canyon fire was estimated to be around 50 acres early Thursday afternoon, then spread rapidly to over 600 acres, burning out from the pill community and burning out in the direction of several scattered ranch homes. The fire began north of Highway 126, east of the Los Angeles County Line, and the flames were expected to spread to Los Angeles County.

Evacuations have been ordered in the recreational area of Lake Pill and in parts of the surrounding area. Evacuation warnings have been issued for several ranches at the extreme western edge of Holther Canyon.

The water-drooping aircraft, including air tankers, accommodated areas with low temperatures and winds plunging into 25 mph, approaching triple digits. Firefighters were replenishing firefighters using Lake Pill, a reservoir in the Los Padres National Forest in northwest Los Angeles.

Details regarding the cause were not available immediately.
