The City of Westminster is suing two sitting city council members for allegedly disrupting a meeting.
LAist reported that the city’s lawsuit alleges that City Council members Amy Van West and Nam Quang Nguyen created a “dysfunctional and noisy” atmosphere that prevented them from deliberating or voting on important matters during meetings. claims to be hindering it.
“The Mayor has been unable to control their unruly behavior, and repeated efforts to obtain their compliance have failed,” the lawsuit said, the outlet reported. “As a result, the City Council ends its meetings without accomplishing its mission, meets late into the night, and generally leaves those who care about responsible and effective City Council operations frustrated.”
West, who voted against the bill, came under fire from city council members earlier this year for “allegedly violating at least 30 city policies,” the Voice of OC reported. It was just her and Mr. Nguyen.
The newspaper said her response to the accusations was combative, “calling the parliamentary majority ‘Chinese Communist Party dictators’ and calling the debate a ‘banana republic court.'”
“The majority are just trying to shut me up,” West said, according to the newspaper. “You can censor me. Come on in. You’re welcome.”
But some residents have argued that West and Nguyen are “authoritarian” and that they are using the office for their own benefit.
“The hidden political motives of Councilor Amy Van West and Deputy Mayor Nam Quang are looming over City Hall, trying to hide behind a veil of ‘respect,’ ‘order,’ and ‘safety.’ Lisa Nguyen and Vincent P. Tran wrote in an opinion piece.
Nguyen and West did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
