At least 10 people were hospitalized after a crash involving a motorcycle police officer during a Palm Springs holiday parade Saturday night.
The accident occurred around 6 p.m. near Palm Canyon Drive and Amado Road, where a crowd had gathered to watch the 32nd Annual Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade.
Witnesses told the Desert Sun newspaper that the officer was performing a wheelie trick when he suddenly lost control of his bike and fell.
The motorcycle then continued down the road and crashed into the crowd, the Palm Springs Post reported.
The driver’s hand was reportedly severed in the accident.
Palm Springs police confirmed that the nine injured spectators were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cellphone video from witnesses showed a chaotic scene as protesters rushed to help injured bystanders. A motor police officer’s motorcycle was seen lying on the ground near the crowd.
The parade was temporarily suspended after the accident, but later resumed. The parade, held in downtown Palm Springs, typically draws between 80,000 and 100,000 spectators each year.
“We appreciate the community’s support. Our thoughts are with the officers, their families, and all those injured today,” Palm Springs Police said.
The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Anyone with video or images of the crash is asked to email the footage to PSCityGovernmentMedia@palmspringsca.gov.
