Seven Southern Californians were identified as burglars who targeted Brinkstrack in Grapevine three years ago, separating what officials say are the biggest gem robbers in US history.
The July 10, 2022 robbery led to thefts of “about $100 million worth of gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and luxury watches,” the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release.
Some of the items that had been transported to one of Pasadena from a jewelry show near San Francisco were recovered by authorities earlier this month, the DOJ said.
The DOJ said seven people were charged with two conspiracies, including committing theft from interstate and foreign shipping and theft, and committing theft from theft.
Carlos Victor Mestanza Cercado, 31, of Pasadena Jazael Padilla Resto, aka “Ricardo Noel Moya,” “Ricardo Barbosa” and “Alberto Javier Loza Chamorro,” 36, of Boyle Heights and currently an inmate in Arizona state prison Pablo Raul Lugo Larroig, aka “Walter Loza,” 41, of Rialtovictor Hugo Valencia Solorzano, 60, Los Angeles Enriquearban, Los Angeles, Lampert Village district, South Los Angeles Jayjun Prissyra Flores, 42, 36, Eduardomacia Swirlborough, Westlake district, Westlake district, Los Angeles district, 42, 42, 42, 36, Eduardomacia Swirlborough, Westlake district, Westlake district, Los Angeles district
Of these seven, five of Mestanza, Padilla, Lugo, Valencia and Alban, allegedly inferring two conspiracy to intervene in commercial transactions by robbery and commerce by robbery, and “addition of theft from interstate and foreign cargo.”
In addition to the 2022 theft at the Rebec rest area, “Mestanza, Padilla, Lugo and Valencia are allegedly stolen Samsung electronics worth $240,573 from interstate cargo transport in Ontario on March 2, 2022,” the prosecutor said.
“These same defendants and Alban are allegedly robbed Apple Airtags box truck drivers worth $57,377,” DOJ said. “One of the robbers swings a knife around and threatens the driver.”
Federal officials also alleged that the crew attempted a similar break-in with Fontana trucks.
If a suspect burglar is convicted, each theft will be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in federal prison, five years on each conspiracy charge, and 20 counts for each robbery charge.
