Move LA. There is a new king of Karmageddon.

According to Consumeraffairs’ 2025 traffic rankings, Washington, DC has ousted longtime champion Los Angeles, officially taking the wheels as a city in America’s worst traffic. The average commute in the country’s capital now records clocks in traffic jams that stretch for 6.5 hours a day, 33.4 minutes (the longest in the US). And if you’ve recently tried to cross the Roosevelt Bridge, you know it will feel even longer.

Experts say DC’s busy spikes are being driven by a complete storm of triple threat factors for long-term construction projects that will narify major arteries and the mission of returning to offices after the pandemic. Rehabilitation work on the Golden Week Parkway, major lane closures at Roosevelt Bridge, and delays in I-495 have many reasons to shout drivers at the steering wheel.

To be fair, LA is not running accurately at Coast. It still claims the top spot for most of the daily traffic jams to translate 85 days of stop-and-go each year for 85 days each year. However, with DC drivers commuting more time and navigating active construction zones, the district has brought victory in this losing competition.

On the bright side, DC commuters are statistically safe. The city ranks among the lowest 10 in fatal car accidents. It’s a little comfort when you’re stuck on the Golden Week Parkway for 45 minutes without a move, but we take it.

Meanwhile, other cities on the rise (or down depending on how you’re looking at it) include Miami’s worst UP, the 12th to 3rd in just one year, and Atlanta, where Miami fell the top five with 31 minutes of commute and roughly five hours of busy weekday.

If you’re wondering where to get away from traffic dramas entirely, try Rochester, New York. The average commute is just over 21 minutes, and “rush hour” sounds like an internal joke.

But for now, Washington can claim the dubious honor of sitting in the country’s slowest capital. Don’t forget the podcast queue. You’re going to do it for a while.
