The head of Doge currently has tens of thousands of dollars for his company as government efficiency (DOGE) is looking for ways to reduce federal spending.

Before we had revenues exceeded $97 billion in 2024 and writing it down as insignificant for a company like Tesla, the money we found was not trivial. It covers the entire salary.

KTLA 5 News has identified more than $100,000 in unclaimed real estate records for Tesla in California and Texas. This money is just sitting there and not being charged.

KTLA 5 news discovered that Tesla in California and Texas has unclaimed funds. March 2025.

But it’s just Tesla. You might be surprised to hear that the Association of Unclaimed Property Managers (yes, that can happen) estimates that state finance personnel hold more than $70 billion in unclaimed properties.

Of these billions, a significant portion belongs to the government itself. Yes, Doge wants efficiency, so you may need to start with government own money that is not billed in many states own.

Homeland Security, the U.S. Postal Service, Medicare, the Military, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Transport, the National Park Service, and the Department of Veterans Affairs are all waiting.

Customs and Border Patrol hit the jackpot. We found a total of $143,140 from Wells Fargo, who sits in California’s unclaimed real estate fund. There are thousands of dollars owed to CBP, and even tens of thousands of dollars. It’s their own money, just sitting there.

We found the money owed to the IRS. Yes, they’re getting a refund. The 20-page listing for California includes jackpot amounts of $28,000, $75,000 and $80,000. In fact, KTLA has identified more than $700,000 in unclaimed money against the California-only IRS. The numbers can be much higher as they only account for over $1,000. Money not charged to the IRS comes from almost every major bank, company, etc. Free money you can use if only the IRS claims it.

KTLA 5 news has found that funds that are not being charged to the IRS.

The US Treasury is worth its own set of lists (separate from the IRS) (separate from the IRS). This is in California, with a range of $75,755, $29,998, $19,000, $16,000 and $12,000.

Veterans Affairs Bureau – So much is being made about our veterans and their agents. A California-only listing page shows money that is not being charged for an amount like $46,000.

The Social Security Administration has a list of more than 22 pages. The amount will be smaller, but most still cost thousands of dollars.

Remember, this is uncharged money. They are just waiting for the right government agency to come and claim it.

School districts and state agencies are also listed. Yes, we found out that California administrators who run real estate sites that are not billed in California hold money that is not actually billed.

Doge estimates that it could have already saved $55 billion by cancelling or renegotiating leases and contracts, selling assets, and searching for savings. Some estimates show that they are much less.

Whatever that amount, there is another $70 billion in unclaimed property funds belonging to people across the country. Many of them got caught up in this crazy cycle of unclaimed money belonging to the government.

So why aren’t you being charged? Well, that might mean that many large institutions don’t even know that the money is there.

We spoke with the IRS, customs and the Border Patrol. Both were investigating this issue. Neither of them were aware of the huge amount we told them. However, CBP told KTLA: “These types of unclaimed real estate cases are not uncommon due to large volumes of transactions that include collection of fees, taxes and obligations from importers. In 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) raised over $92.3 billion.”

With regard to people like you and me, raising unclaimed funds can be bothering and confusing.

This author recently discovered that I have $100 in unclaimed money. I sent out a photo of my driver’s license, proof of my Social Security number and all the information I requested. The state responded with acknowledgement that it had received my information. A note was then added that it took another six months to return the unclaimed money if it was found to meet all the requirements.

And it’s a simple process. Neighboring funds may require death certificates, notaries and the entire process in some states. If the amount isn’t big enough, it may be easier to leave unclaimed money.

With all this talk about efficiency, looking at unclaimed property and what belongs to the US government by state, by state, could lead to unexpected funding.

If you think you may be owed or have unclaimed property, then check if you live or live in the present and follow the process to charge your money. The National Association of Property Managers, which is not billed, has links to each state’s website and an interactive map.
