Citing his desire to “recover California’s dreams to everyone,” Republican candidates in the 2026 race say they will eliminate state income taxes if elected to become California’s next governor.

In a video posted to X, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said he and his team would “work quickly” to eliminate income taxes for all Californians.

“I believe that hardworking workers in California can spend much better money than the government today,” Bianco said.

Bianco launched its campaign last month. Since then, he has run on the notion that California is “over-taxed and regulated,” leading to thousands of people and businesses leaving the state.

As of 2025, according to the H&R Block, California’s income tax rate is 12.3% for married couples making more than $1,442,628. According to the US Census, the median household income was around $96,000 in 2023, which is 6% for married couples making between $80,490 and $111,732.

Bianco blames that high percentage for the so-called “Exodus of California” as the nation loses hundreds of thousands of residents to other states.

“Last year, about halfway through, I saw most of my friends selling their business, I stopped work completely, retired early and moved to other states, usually for the same reason,” Bianco said. “I left all the businesses, a better way to get back all my friends than to eliminate California income tax.”

Nine States – Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming essentially do not have state income taxes, but these states usually make up for the difference with other ways, such as higher sales, real estate, and gas taxes.

Bianco is a passionate supporter of President Donald Trump, and he himself leads an unconventional tax system focused on collecting foreign tariffs while reducing tax rates for some Americans.
