Samuel Haskell IV, a man charged with killing and dismantling his wife in addition to his in-laws in 2023, died in prison over the weekend, authorities said.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman confirmed Haskell had died of suicide early Monday afternoon.
Haskell was found dead on his phone at Twin Towers Correctional Facility around 4:20 a.m. Saturday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday morning. LASD did not disclose the cause of death.
But LA County District Attorney Hochmann was dull when he announced the death of a suspected triple murder, when it was a suicide.
“Instead of standing in front of the judge and answering the crime he was charged with, the defendant could escape justice,” Hochman said. “This is the last cruel act by someone who has done the most horrible things for reasons we never fully know.”

“Now that the family, who have been dealing with unimaginable losses, have been deprived of him of the opportunity to face him, take responsibility for his wild actions and openly share their grief and precious memories of their loved ones,” Hochman continued.

Authorities began examining Haskell after a recyclable found the human torso in a garbage can in the San Fernando Valley on November 8, 2023. But by the time the officers arrived, the bags were gone.
Later, Haskell hired livestock for four days to dispose of the bag, it was stated by the LA County District Attorney’s Office. One of them opened one of their bags and looked at the contents and was called the police.
Haskell, the son of a prominent agent of Samuel Haskell III, the William Morristalent Agency in Hollywood, was arrested the same day the body parts were found after detectives visited his home and found evidence of “dismantling” there.
Investigators believe the torso in the trash can belong to Haskell’s 37-year-old wife, May Lee Haskell, who believes May Lee’s parents, Gao Shan Lee, 72, and Yang Xian Wang, 64, were killed by Haskell. They all lived in the same house with three children from Haskell.

No archaeological sites of both Li and Wang have been discovered.
Haskell was formally charged with three counts of murder on November 13, 2023. He appeared in the first courthouse about a month later.
Court records show Haskell was assigned permanent home on Saturday on the day of his death and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday.
