A man was attacked and killed by three dogs at a local park Friday afternoon, San Diego police said.
Police said the dogs, identified as XL Blues, known for their size and strength, attacked their owners at a children’s play area at Mesa Viking Neighborhood Park. Officials said officers had to use a Taser to stop the attack.
Witness Steve Marto, who lives across the street from the park, told Nexstar’s KSWB/KUSI that at first he thought police were trying to detain someone.
“I saw something trapped in the weeds here. At first I thought it was a person because they were talking about setting up a perimeter,” Marto said. He then realized that the officers were trying to round up three large dogs.

“They were big, like XL bullies, just huge muscles,” Marto explained.
Police said a witness called 911 to report the attack around noon. Police arrived and found the man, who had been bitten multiple times by the dog. A child who was with the victim was unharmed.
Good Samaritans attempted to intervene by hitting the dogs with shovels and possibly a golf club, which was also found at the scene, along with torn clothing and shoes. Officers used a Taser to quell the attack and the dogs fled.
“Officers were able to disintegrate the dog. They escaped and the injured man was taken to hospital with unknown injuries,” said Sgt. Matthew Horne said. The victim’s sister confirmed to KSWB/KUSI that the victim later died at the hospital.

Two of the dogs were quickly captured, but the third remained at large, and nearby Erickson Elementary School was placed on lockdown. Parents of students at the school were notified via email.
Police later found a third dog at its owner’s home near the park.
Marto expressed concerns about owning such a powerful animal.
“I don’t understand why anyone would want to have three dogs of that size. In my opinion, you’re just looking for trouble,” he said.
As of Friday, authorities had not yet determined what would happen to the dogs.
