Los Angeles Dodgers’ Phenom Shohai Otani is clearly an elite pitcher and batter, and doesn’t seem satisfied with being a batter.
On Thursday, the versatile MLB Slugger announced advance reservations for his first children’s book, “Decoy Save Opening Day.” This book will hit the shelf early next year.
The story is inspired by Otani’s beloved dog, who shares the same name with the honorable character, and is written by Otani along with author Michael Banks and illustrated by Fanny Lim.
The plot of the author debut of the three-time MVP follows a decoy on the first day of baseball, preparing to throw the first pitch to begin the season. However, when Decoy forgets about his lucky baseball at home, problems arise.
“Can he get the ball and get it back to the stadium before it’s too late?” The book’s promotional page teases.

The storyline may seem overblown, but Decoy actually “threw” his first pitch at Dodger Stadium last season.
Otani, an advocate for animal rescue and adoption efforts, hopes the release of the book will help support “amazing nonprofits” who help dogs find their eternal home.
“While their fictional counterparts save the first day, the shoes hei and decoy work to help trouble real animals,” the book website reads.
“Decoy Save Opening Day” is scheduled to be released on February 3, 2026. Additional information and pre-order resources can be found here.
