“When I first arrived in Washington a few years ago, I realized that a lot of people were running based on border issues,” said Ciscommani. “They’re interested in fixing it and dealing with it, but many of them didn’t have the opportunity to visit the border. They probably went to the Texas area, even if they had it. And Arizona is so unique in so many ways, right?”

Lawmakers added that there was a encounter between millions of immigrants during former President Joe Biden’s tenure, so there’s still more to do to ensure that changes based on the Trump administration are permanent to prevent another border crisis in the future.

In a highly competitive district, including many of the Tucson suburbs, Ciscomani has promoted the recent passing of Agent Raul Gonzalez’s Office Safety Act. Some Democrats supported the law, while others said it was too far.

“In the asylum process, for example, you have to increase the standard of trustworthy fear,” said Ciscomani. “It’s like staying in Mexico. I think that should be permanent. So I have some ideas about this through the reconciliation.”

There was room for bipartisan work, including legislation that Ciscomani and Don Davis, DN.C., is working to acquire image technicians for entry ports, in the hopes of faster and more thorough detection of illegal drugs.
