When the tractor driver died Tuesday, the tractor trailer rig ran off the road into the Death Valley National Park building, officials said Wednesday.
A single-vehicle collision caused debris to scatter, leaving diesel fuel in the CA-190 between the stove pipe well and the townpass, closing the main road through the park for about 22 hours. The roads resumed Wednesday morning.

The collision is likely caused by a malfunctioning brake, officials said.
The CA-190 has long and sudden performance on both sides of the Town Pass, with truck fires becoming a problem recently. The electric contractor’s truck burned after the town pass was dropped off on April 9th. Six commercial trucks and one five-wheel RV were set on fire under Town Pass in 2024.

The truck collided with a historic stone immigrant ranger station built by civilian conservation forces in the 1930s. It crashed into the building’s porch, destroyed two stone pillars, damaged the roof and smashed the windows, park officials said.

Stan Jones wrote the song “Ghost Rider in the Sky” in 1947 while living in the building and working as a park ranger. The building has not been in use for decades.
The Hazmat team cleaned up the leak overnight. The truck was carrying luggage from the mines in Searles Valley.
