A Southern California man has been arrested and faces a federal charge that allegedly caused a laser pointer to shine on a helicopter at the Los Angeles Police Department.
Dominique Rios, 21, was arrested Monday, almost a month after the June 10 incident while monitoring the protests in downtown Los Angeles.
Rios, whose most recent known address is in Hemet, was discovered by helicopter pilots and fugitives.
“LAPD officers searched for Rios and found a laser pointer in their pocket,” the release said. “After LAPD officers milanded Rios, Rios admitted to using a green laser pointer on the LAPD helicopter.”
Rios is free on bonds and faces up to five years in federal prison if convicted.
Authorities also detailed damage that a laser pointer could cause if used improperly.
“Whether military or commercial, if the laser beam is targeted at a piloted aircraft, what might look like a small beam on the ground could cause an airborne collision or other incident, potentially causing an airborne collision,” the FBI explained.
