The U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) attack sparked a scene of widespread protest, conflict and confusion as federal agents were detained Friday across Los Angeles.
Protesters flocked the streets and jumped in front of law enforcement as KTLA captured tensions escalating from both the air and the ground day and night.
Agents moved to at least three locations throughout the day. One of the most visible conflicts took place outside Home Depot in the Westlake area.
As stunned shoppers watch, riot equipment ice agents were seen colliding through the parking lot and chasing them.
Another attack unfolded at a clothing store on Town Avenue, a fashion district. Several workers were taken into custody in handcuffs and loaded into waiting vans. Outside, other agents in the tactical device engaged in tense standoffs with onlookers and activists used megaphones to urge clothing workers not to sign documents or speak to federal agents.
In the evening, flash bang renades and tear gas filled the air as Los Angeles Police Department officials responded to the rise in turmoil in the Civic Center area.
At 7:51pm, Central LAPD declared illegal gatherings on Alameda and Temple Streets, warning that anyone who failed to leave would be arrested.
Minutes later, the department reported that a group of violent individuals were throwing large concrete. Officers were allowed to use non-fatal ammunition to disperse the crowd.
By 8:24pm, LAPD issued a citywide tactical warning, requiring that all officers remain on duty.
A traffic advisory has also been issued. Alameda Street was closed between Aliso and 1st Avenue, with detours recommended via Los Angeles, Main Street or Spring Street. East and west traffic was rerouted to 1st Avenue.
Homeland Security Investigation (HSI), the ICE division, confirmed that the agents had executed four federal search warrants with partner agencies, including the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Agency.
“Around 44 people have been arrested administratively and one has been arrested for obstruction. The investigation is ongoing and updates will continue as needed,” a spokesman for the HSI said.
That single obstruction arrest was confirmed by US Attorney Bill Essay as David Fuerta, president of the California International Service Employees Union.
Essayli posted images of the union leader handcuffed and placed behind the vehicle. A video of the alleged incident that led to his arrest was also posted. It showed that Furuta was temporarily standing near the front of the unmarked white SUV used in the surgery before getting out of the way by federal agents.

Fuerta’s arrest, who said his union member was injured, was condemned by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
“No one should be harmed by witnessing government actions,” Newsom added.
In a news release issued Friday evening, Seiu California said Huerta was treated at a local hospital for being injured during his arrest but is currently in federal custody.
He issued the following statement through the union:
“What happened to me isn’t about me. This is much bigger. It’s about us as a community standing together and resisting the injustice that is happening. Hardworking people, as well as our families and members of our community, are treated like criminals. We all need to stand against this insanity.
