The 2025 vote saw six LA chefs, restaurants, bars, bakeries and writers as James Bearder’s War finalists. The awarding machine, widely known as the “Oscar of Food,” recognizes chefs, restaurants, bar directors, writers and journalists across the country.

The restaurant and chef awards were first announced on April 2nd, but the media awards were not announced until today. From 16 semi-finals, just three LA County chefs, restaurants and bakeries advanced to the final round. John Yao from Kato in the “Best Chef: California” category. Tobincia of Redbird, “a great expert in cocktail services.” And Gustopan in Long Beach – this is one of the best bakeries in town and we consider it to be totally worth a drive.

In the media category, three local journalists from the Los Angeles Times featured the nominations. Critic Bill Addison was nominated for “Food and Travel” as a guide to San Francisco and columnist Jen Harris. He was also recognized for his work in the category “Craig Claiborne’s Famous Criticism.” In “Home Cooking,” senior editor Daniel Dorsey was nominated for a recipe and reporting package on the Black Thanksgiving tradition.

Within Southern California, some of the Orange County neighbors featured nominations: Anaheim Tikibur Strong Water (an outstanding wine and other drinks program) and Daniel Castillo from San Juan Capistrano Heritage Barbecue (Best Chef: California).

The James Beard Foundation’s annual awards “recognize outstanding talent in the cooking and food media industry.” In 2025, the 35th edition, the foundation added a category focused on three new bars. Last year, Maynard Llera Lord of Kuya Lord won the “Best Chef: California” for his fast-speed Filipino cuisine led by East Hollywood.
