The illegal immigrant truck driver accused of causing the crash that killed three people in Florida was given a work permit under the Biden administration, officials said.
Haljinder Singh, who was arrested on Saturday for three vehicle murders in Stockton, California, illegally entered the United States, and on September 14, 2020, he was denied approval of his job under the Trump administration, said Tricia McLaughlin, deputy secretary for homeland security.

McLaughlin pointed to Singh’s approval of work in response to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who said the first Trump administration “confirmed that this man meets federal and state immigration requirements — you confirmed that he has issued a work permit (EAD).”
“As usual, the Trump administration is lying or ignorant,” Newsom’s news agency wrote to X.
McLaughlin noted that the federal government will not issue commercial driver’s licenses.
“Fake. Haljinder Singh was illegally in the US and on September 14, 2020, approval of his job was denied under the Trump administration,” she wrote. “It was later approved under the Biden administration on June 9, 2021. California issues commercial driver’s licenses. There are no national CDLs. From the heart, genius.”
Officials believe Singh, who has crossed the US-Mexico border in 2018, has obtained a commercial driver’s license in California despite his illegal status in the US.

He is in custody on both state vehicle murder charges, as well as immigration violations.
Singh was driving a commercial truck with a trailer on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce when he allegedly attempted a U-turn in an unauthorized area. This move caused the trailer to collide with a jackknife and a minivan. All three of the minivan passengers have been killed, officials said.
Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem said that if California had followed federal immigration laws, three deaths could have been avoided.

“Three innocent people were killed in Florida as Gavin Newsom’s California DMV issued commercial driver’s licenses to illegal aliens,” she wrote in X.
