Audits have failed to audit long-term government initiatives to reduce traffic deaths in Los Angeles.
Vision Zero was a plan implemented in LA in 2015 by then Mayor Eric Garcetti, but by 2025 it had a noble goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2025 by educating people about the potential dangers of roads and working with agencies that design safer streets.
In the first two years of Vision Zero implementation in LA, total traffic deaths to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians were 245 and 241. In 2022 and 2023, it was 368 and 333.
That data comes from LAPD and KPMG. KPMG will partner with the City of LA to audit the implementation of Vision Zero. It is used in over 50 cities around the world to prevent traffic deaths.

The reason is that you don’t work in LA? According to KPMG, there is a lack of commitment from leadership.
The auditing company has listed the following conclusions as to why Vision Zero doesn’t work in LA as well as in other cities:
Lack of clear governance for this city-wide programme and priorities among various stakeholders that are not always coordinated. No tools were implemented to monitor and manage programs, affecting transparency
and justification of departmental budget requests. The lack of a balanced approach as fundraising was primarily assigned for engineering activities;
Minimum funding in education, enforcement and evaluation reduces participation of key stakeholders.
Vision Zero’s budget has been hovered for approximately $36 million per year over the last three fiscal years.
