A barber who was cutting hair at Prodigy Barber Shop in Mission Hills on Wednesday was shot, leaving him unable to walk and in the hospital with serious injuries, according to his family.

Surveillance video shows victim Anthony Lotarte attending to a client when a masked man shoots through the front door and takes off on a motorized scooter onto the 405 freeway. The footage showed what appeared to be a random attack.

Lotarte’s mother, Michelle Moreno, said her son is now completely helpless in a hospital bed and has suffered nerve damage.

“He’s not doing well, he’s not walking and he doesn’t have much feeling from the waist down,” Moreno told KTLA’s Rachel Menitoff. “That bullet severed the nerve that goes to his spine, so it’s going to be a long walk for him. He’s not going to walk for a long time.”

Moreno said her son’s back was facing the front door and the bullet went through his lower back, affecting all of that area. He can’t move his legs very much.

Lotarte reportedly did not know the man who attacked him and believed it was a random act.

His boss, Hashem Pashtunwar, who was present during the shooting, said it all happened quickly. He hopes the public will come forward with tips and leads.

“It’s my responsibility for these people to go home at the end of the day, but he didn’t go home at the end of the day,” said barber shop owner Pashtunwar. . “So I would like something to be done because I take this very personally.”

Moreno said she believed the gunman was local to Mission Hills and seemed to know where he was and what he was doing.

There is a GoFundMe to help with Anthony’s medical expenses and groceries. His mother says he supports the family but is currently unable to work.
