Ohio State University researchers are left unfunded after cancelling Doge’s words that he said were misunderstood.
In November 2022, Professor Julie Aldridge of OSU Engineering Education Research was awarded $713,155 in funding from the National Science Foundation, which will be paid over four years. Less than three years later, her grant was cancelled due to its title “Institutional Climate Challenges: Promoting Student Retention from Underrepresented Groups in PhD Engineering Programs.”
Aldridge said she was out of state at the Science Council when OSU’s sponsored project office received the cancellation notice on April 25th. The office received the closing prize email list and defeated the news to Aldridge, leaving colleagues from the sponsored project office.

“And can you imagine having to do that? And Friday afternoon? That’s another thing. These actions tend to take place late on Friday,” Aldridge said.
Aldridge said she and her colleagues knew it might come. Her project was included in the environmental justice category on Ted Cruz’s list of “Promoting Neo-Marxist Propaganda.” Aldridge said her awards were flagged because it included the term “climate,” which was used to describe the organization’s environment.
“We learn that keyword searches are used to identify end-of-a-win awards, and “climate” is a trigger word,” Aldridge said. “Searching is automated, meaning that the context of the keyword is lost.”
When she was awarded the grant, Aldridge told OSU’s College of Engineering Communications University that she asked NSF to expand the scope of the project to also focus on LGBTQ+ retention in its doctoral engineering program. She said the study looked at NSF priority areas and expanded STEM participation set by Congress.
The grant still had $423,599.71 outstanding. During the first two years of the study, Aldridge and Co-Researchers used the data to develop a study to best obtain reasons for low retention. In the third and fourth years Aldridge is currently working on, the survey is to be distributed to current doctoral engineering students. Currently, Aldridge is left without funding or data it wanted to collect.
“Awards that do not align with NSF’s priorities have concluded the awards, including but not limited to those relating to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and misinformation/disinformation,” NSF said.

According to the NSF, the award is a final decision and cannot be appealed because it “no longer (effectively) prioritizes the program’s goals or agency’s priorities.” The new guidelines do not allow researchers to focus on expanding STEM opportunities for protected identities.
Aldridge said it would be difficult to know where to go next after the grant was cancelled. She said that getting federal grants for research is a highly competitive process, and reductions disproportionately impacting social science and education research, making it even more difficult for her field to win funds.
“Before Doge’s acquisition, my plan was to follow up on my current research with a new study focusing on doctoral students with disabilities,” Aldridge said. “It’s off the table because “failure” is another trigger word. ”
Aldridge had a proposal for another National Science Foundation grant, recommended for fundraising, but she said this status is pending. She said Doge is trying to eliminate the National Science Foundation division, which funds the award. Aldridge said the court’s order has halted its repeal, but the program does not appear to be pending or actively approving or approving the new award.
The National Science Foundation’s end is unattractive, but Aldridge said she is still suing it “on procedural basis.” She warned that more research cuts would come every week, and pleaded people to recognize the impact that American science and research will become “at risk.”
