Officials announced at 8 p.m. Sunday that all road closures and restrictions have been lifted in the Franklin fire area, including Malibu Canyon, as crews work to extinguish the blaze.
“Fire activity is minimal and smoldering and creeping in isolated areas within the fire perimeter,” fire officials said in an update Sunday.
After a weekend of cooler temperatures, the Franklin Fire remained at 4,037 acres despite growing to 49% containment, according to Cal Fire.
“Crews working in the affected areas may experience intermittent road closures as firefighters and utility crews work hard to restore roads and neighborhoods,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. We ask drivers to be patient.”
A total of 20 structures were destroyed and another 28 were damaged, authorities said.
CAL FIRE said firefighters will continue to build and strengthen containment lines around the fire.
“The fire continues to smolder in steep and extremely dangerous terrain,” the CAL FIRE update said. “Aerial suppression operations in these areas were successful in suppressing the fire.”
The fire first broke out about a week ago, late at night on Dec. 9, prompting immediate evacuation orders and warnings in Malibu.
Authorities issued orders and warnings to several communities on and adjacent to Malibu Canyon Road. However, some residents chose to stay home and protect their homes and the homes of their neighbors.
Pepperdine University, whose campus is located at Malibu Canyon Road and Pacific Coast Highway, was not evacuated, but local elementary, middle, and high schools were closed through the weekend.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but no injuries were reported.
