A jewelry store in downtown Los Angeles was targeted by robbers Monday in an assault that could cost a multi-million-dollar business.
The robbery was reported just before 10am, and when officers in the 500 block of Roadway arrived at the scene, they learned that an unknown suspect had entered the country and taken his property, according to LAPD officials.
The son of the owner of the store who didn’t want to be identified told KTLA that the value of the stolen goods was millions and that the burglars were probably professional crew members and tunneled into the store from a building next to the sky.
“They were probably there every night and slowly drilling until there was enough room for them to enter,” he explained.
Upon entering, he said the robber had disabled the store’s cameras and alarms and entered the main part of the store. There they targeted two large safes.
He estimates that the work has taken away a crew of perhaps five to six hours, and that he is safely drilling holes for about three hours. As for the second safe, they managed to get inside it without excavating.
“They probably had a professional locksmith,” the shopkeeper’s son said.
Investigators at the Los Angeles Police Department have not confirmed the value of what was filmed, but the shopkeeper didn’t carry insurance. His son said he couldn’t afford it, about $1 million a year.
