“It is with deep sadness and heavy heart to share the tragic news of Sergeant Siowden’s death, tragically killed in a traffic collision on the 405 highway during the early morning shift on June 23rd.”

Deng, a 26-year veteran of the police department, spent 17 years in the mental assessment department. “He cared for the most vulnerable people in our society every day,” McDonnell said.

“His losses are immeasurable and the sadness we feel is shared not only by men and women of LAPD, but also by the entire law enforcement agency and the residents he has served very faithfully,” McDonnell said.

The 53-year-old sergeant encountered a crash scene around 2am, stopping the patrol vehicle and alerting him to approaching traffic with lights flashing and he was able to help those involved in the incident.

“He left the police vehicle and approached the crash, and was hit from the back by approaching traffic,” LAPD chief Jim McDonnell said at a morning press conference.

“He was taken to UCLA Medical Center and despite his brave efforts, he didn’t do it. He passed away one day this morning,” McDonnell said.

The firefighters stood up and saluted during the procession carrying Den’s body from the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center to the Hollenbeck Regional Coroner’s Office.
