A Southern California man who survived a mass shooting outside a casino hotel in Reno, Nevada, recalls a horrifying moment in which a gunman fires, kills three people and injures others.
On July 28th, Dylan MacLean was staying at the Grand Sierra Resort and casino that weekend, along with many other 12 friends in the Ventura County area.
At about 7:30am, the group was checking out and waiting in the Bullet area to get on the airport as the gunman stood up and fired. McLean heard what sounded like firecrackers as the shooters appeared from behind them.
“We just turned around and the guy was 15-20 feet away,” he recalls. “He had a gun here and he was either troubled it or was trying to jam it. We all recognized it at the same time and we all took off.”

Reno shooter Dakota Hover, 26, reportedly pointed a 9mm handgun at the group. The firearm initially malfunctioned, but he was able to fire the weapon several times and fired multiple rounds before fleeing on foot.
He eventually shot security guards, fatally shot someone driving in the car park, and was fired by Reno police officers and hit a patrol vehicle, officials said. Police returned to Hover and attacked him. He was taken to hospital, where he remained in a critical state.
Three people were killed in the shooting: Justin Agria, 33, and Andrew Canepa, 33, and Angel Martinez, 66, a Southern California resident and a Nevada resident. Three other victims were injured but survived.
MacLean’s two close friends, Kanepa and Aguilla, were struck and killed. McLean escaped and a bullet grazes its torso to the left. Another friend was shot several times, but is recovering from the ICU. McLean said the incident is beyond shocking and devastating.
“You never think it’s going to happen to you,” he said. “Even looking back, it’s a huge casino, it’s a huge town, we’re one group. How can this happen to us?”

MacLean described Kanepa as a bright light. Kanepa was the co-owner of the popular Side Street Café in Newbury Park and was the loving husband and father of his six-year-old son.
“No matter what’s going on in his life, you’ll never know that,” McLean said. “He’s very sweet.”
He described his friend Aguilla as a generous soul who had a way of making everyone feel like they were watching. Aguila was a beloved son and brother, and was also involved in getting married.
“They were perfect for each other in every way and we’ve been waiting for them to get engaged for a long time,” McLean said.
As the victim’s family lamented the lost life, MacLean said he was focused on supporting his lifelong friends and their loved ones during this difficult time.

Detectives later confirmed that the shooter had fired around 80 rounds using multiple magazines. He has no relation to any of the victims and the motivation behind the mass shooting remains unknown. He remains in a dangerous state.
