Add another reason to grow glasses in Los Angeles: The next door bar officially wins spots with the 50 best bars that are honored on the North American Expansion List, ranking 51-100 top water holes in the region. This small Sunset Strip destination, coming to No. 100, joins the ranks of the highest drinking destinations across the continent.
The bar next door is quietly (and so quietly) changing the way Angelenos does cocktails for quite some time. With its charming interior, sparkling candlelight, and unpretentious attitude, it’s the place where you’ll trip over a drink and accidentally stay for hours.
Here, the perfectly crafted signature cocktail is named after the LA icon. As Patricia Kelly Yeau, our food and drink editor, noted, examples include the distinct Paloma Rose Splitz, inspired by the Beverly Hills hotel, as well as the Viper Room Pisco and Passion Fruit Aude.
Released by 50 best widely known organizations, this list covers bars in the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean based on votes from 300 industry actors, from bartenders and bar owners to drink journalists and cocktail nerds. In other words, it’s not just a popular contest, it’s a serious business.
Unlike several other cities that won the mention, New York won nine bars in the top 100, but LA has only one on the expansion list this year. But if you have only representatives (at least in the range of 51-100), the next bar is a suitable choice. It captures what we love most about the local bar scene: a modest cool, warm hospitality and a drink that actually tastes as much as it looks.
The 50 best bar list in North America will be revealed on April 29th at a live ceremony in Vancouver. Fingers crossed, and more LA spots were cut. Last year, Thunderbolt and Mireto from Los Ferris’ historic Philippine town cracked the top 50 list. But up until then, you’ll end up at the bar next door, sipping something powerful, celebrating the well-earned victory for the City of Angels.
