Ah, Oceanwide Plaza…Crypto.com Arena – The Adjacent Towers trio began construction 10 years ago, but got stuck in 2019 when the developers ran out of money. Then, at the beginning of last year, a window on the approximately 27th floor was tagged with a very visible graffiti. And although LA City Council initially said it would clean up the building, it still remains tagged. Now, these monuments to the downtown LA recession are about to be immortalized in video games.
The exterior of the Graffiti Towers is actually part of a much brighter announcement. The upcoming Los Angeles-inspired levels of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 include detailed recreation of Miracle Mile’s much-loved Elle Ray Theatre. Both Goldenvoice and Roxy also have level signs, thanks to a collaboration between publisher Activision and promoter AEG Presents.
However, the footage of El Rey’s inclusion inclusion has one unforgettable detail. The graffiti-filled skyscrapers looming in the background look like undeniably haunted square buildings across the ocean.
If you’re wondering what the Mid Wilshire theatre is doing next to DTLA’s skyscrapers, the LA-level remake of the early skateboarding game is like a pastiche of local landmarks. (And the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 didn’t include Elle Ray in its space, but instead is an adult cinema.) The Purple Tower of Pershing Square is quickly recognised, like a car wash by Biltmore and LA Live on the other side of the street. You can also find US bank towers, the LA Central Library, and elevated highways where several fictitious earthquakes have been damaged.
The latest Tony Hawk Remake will be released on July 11th, but ahead of that, there will be a live stream hosted by El Rey, revealing more information about the game. (Unfortunately, face-to-face events are booked for invited guests, so the average Angelenos has to resort to watching the live stream of THPS Fest.)
By the time the 2028 Olympics arrive in LA, many people can find online about whether Ocean Wide Plaza will scrub or destroy the graffiti scrubs completely, but at worst, these Tony Hawk remakes won Sepulveda Basin for forget forget forget for Graffiti Towers.
